Diary of a Naija Lawyer

Diary of a Naija lawyer features a collection of remarkable experiences of Nigerian lawyers. Pull up a seat and enjoy this episode about Miller’s experience at the court.

MILLER’S EXPERIENCE

It was a bright Monday, as I walked through the doors of the State High Court Ibadan Oyo State, to witness a case between the State and one man who mistakenly had killed one Mrs Odugwu.

At exactly 9:am the Chief Judge who presided over the case was already seated and the case was called for further hearing. The counsel for both parties were present in Court and the Court proceeded for the cross-examination section.

The Prosecuting counsel accordingly discharged his duty with due diligence whilst the defence counsel in discharging his own was so malicious and aggressive in discharging his duty as a counsel, this act by the defence counsel got the Judge upset that he questioned the credibility of the defence counsel.

One striking event that happened on this day was how the defence counsel before entering the Court room brought out a bottle of honey from his bag and poured it into his mouth, when asked why he did that he replied and said “I USED THE HONEY IN ORDER TO MAKE MY WORDS SWEET IN THE EARS OF THE JUDGE”

This act by the defence counsel really shocked me and made me ask if this is how the legal profession works me been a young lawyer.

At the end of this hearing the Chief Judge struck out the case for want of diligence on the defence counsel.
