Diary of a Naija Lawyer

Diary of a Naija lawyer features a collection of remarkable experiences of Nigerian lawyers. Pull up a seat and enjoy this episode about Dunni’e experience.

DUNNI’S EXPERIENCE

The life of a lawyer is a never-ending thread of surprises and hilarious moments. One fateful Monday during the service year, while preparing to go to the office, a senior colleague called me to quickly help secure the police bail of his cousin as he was out of town.

I agreed and proceeded to perform “the law” duties. Upon getting to the police station, I was informed that he had
already been transported to the Magistrate Court for arraignment, with his  family members rejoicing that the “saviour lawyer” was around.

We were barely in time for his arraignment, where I heard for the first that he was being charged with stealing and
assault. Being a court of summary jurisdiction, the Magistrate was ready to proceed with the matter. Here I was, totally clueless, didn’t even know the full name of my client, not to talk of the facts of the case.”Gobe”

Thankfully, the prosecutor understood my plight and we were able to get a short adjournment for the case.

This would remain one of my outstanding experiences, especially as things could have gone south really fast.
